What Is Solar Battery Storage?

A solar battery stores the electricity your solar panels generate during the day and releases it when you need it most — in the evening, overnight, or during a power cut. Without a battery, any surplus energy your panels produce is exported to the grid, often at a lower rate than you pay to import it back.

Adding battery storage to your solar PV system means you use more of the electricity you generate yourself. According to Solar Energy UK, a well-sized battery paired with solar can help a typical household achieve 70–80% energy independence from the grid. For the average UK home consuming around 3,500 kWh per year, that represents a significant and measurable reduction in energy bills.

Batteries can also be charged from the grid overnight on cheap off-peak tariffs (such as Octopus Go or Economy 7)  then discharged during peak hours to reduce what you pay per unit. Homes using this strategy typically save an additional £200–£500 per year on top of the savings from solar generation alone.

Battery Systems We Install

Spartek works with three of the UK’s most trusted battery storage brands. Each offers different capacity options, warranty terms, and smart features. Our team will recommend the right system for your household size, solar array, energy usage and design choices.

Fox Energy Storage

Fox ESS produces one of the most popular hybrid battery systems in the UK residential and light commercial market. Fox batteries use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry — a more stable and longer-lasting cell type than standard lithium-ion. LFP batteries are better suited to the daily charge and discharge cycles of a home solar system and typically carry longer cycle-life warranties as a result. Fox systems integrate with their own hybrid inverter range and include app-based monitoring for real-time visibility of generation, storage, and usage.

Sungrow

Sungrow is one of the world’s largest inverter and battery storage manufacturers, with a strong track record across residential and commercial installations globally. Their SBR home battery system is modular — you can start with a smaller capacity and add modules later as your usage or household changes. Sungrow systems are compatible with their own hybrid inverters and support both new installations and retrofits onto existing solar setups. Known for reliability, competitive pricing, and strong UK after-sales support.

Tesla Powerwall

The Tesla Powerwall is one of the most recognised home battery systems in the UK market. The Powerwall 3 integrates solar and battery into a single unit, simplifying installation and reducing component count. It includes built-in backup capability — meaning your home can continue running on stored solar energy during a grid power cut without additional configuration. Tesla’s app provides detailed real-time monitoring and allows you to set charge and discharge preferences based on your tariff. Warrantied for 10 years at 70% capacity retention

New or Retrofit.

We Handle Both. Solar batteries can be installed in two ways: alongside a brand-new solar PV system, or retrofitted to panels you already have.

New installations allow us to specify the inverter and battery together from the outset, ensuring the whole system is optimised as a single unit. This is usually the most cost-effective approach.

Retrofit installations are for homes and businesses that already have solar panels and want to start storing what they generate rather than exporting it. We assess your existing inverter and system size, confirm compatibility, and specify the right battery. Most Norfolk and Suffolk retrofit jobs are completed within a single day.

If your current inverter is not hybrid-compatible, we will advise on a replacement as part of the quotation we will never recommend a battery that will not work with your existing setup.

Commercial Battery Storage

Battery storage is not just for homes. Spartek installs commercial-scale systems for businesses, farms, schools, and public sector organisations across Norfolk and Suffolk.

Commercial batteries are typically used for three purposes: reducing peak demand charges, storing cheap off-peak energy for daytime use, and for larger systems participating in grid flexibility services through schemes such as the National Grid’s Demand Flexibility Service (DFS).

The DFS pays businesses to reduce grid consumption during peak periods, creating an additional revenue stream from your stored energy.

Our commercial case studies include a 107.92kW solar PV installation for Alan Boswell Group and projects for Waltham Forest Council and Marine Industrial all incorporating storage elements to maximise the return on the solar investment.

How Much Does Solar Battery Storage Cost in Norfolk?

A domestic solar battery installation in Norfolk and Suffolk typically costs between £2,500 and £6,000, depending on battery brand, capacity, and whether a new inverter is required. As a guide:
A 5kWh Huawei LUNA2000 with hybrid inverter sits at the lower end of that range.

A 10kWh GivEnergy system with full smart integration typically falls in the £4,000–£5,500 range. The average payback period for a battery paired with solar is 8–12 years, depending on your usage profile and the tariff you are on though households on time-of-use tariffs often see shorter payback periods.

Spartek provides free, no-obligation quotes either as a desktop estimate from our Watton office or as a site visit for larger or more complex installs. We will always give you a clear breakdown of costs, expected savings, and payback period before any work begins.

Only if the system is configured with a backup or EPS (Emergency Power Supply) mode enabled. The Tesla Powerwall includes built-in backup capability as standard. Fox and Sungrow systems support backup modes depending on configuration.  Speak to our team if blackout protection is a priority and we will specify accordingly.

In most cases, no. Domestic battery storage installed inside a property does not require planning permission. Outdoor installations may be subject to permitted development rules and talking it through with your neighbours might be a good idea. Our team will advise at the quotation stage.

Why Choose Spartek for Battery Storage in Norfolk?

Spartek ECS Ltd has been installing solar and battery storage systems across Norfolk, Suffolk, and East Anglia since 2009. We are MCS Certified, NICEIC Approved, TrustMark registered, and RECC members the full set of credentials that matter for battery storage installations.

MCS certification is particularly important: it is required for your installation to be eligible for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), which pays you for surplus energy exported to the grid. Any installer not MCS-certified cannot give you access to SEG payments.

Our Watton-based team handles everything in-house. We back every installation with a 10-year workmanship guarantee and a 10-year product warranty. After installation, we remain available for ongoing maintenance and support unlike national companies that hand you a manual and move on.
